-The Lead: The Assumption University women's soccer team battled in a 2-1 double overtime setback at Saint Anselm College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hawks got on the board just over 10 minutes in the first half. Senior Regan Pratt found first year Riley Digilio who knocked it over to her classmate Erin Rutherford for the score and the 1-0 lead. The Hawks took the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break as they outshot the Greyhounds 5-2 over the first 45 minutes of play.
-With just five minutes to go in the game, junior Annie Irwin (Norwood, Mass. / Montrose School) tied the game at one with an unassisted tally to force the first overtime period. The Hawks edged the Greyhounds in shots in the second half, 6-4. First year goalkeeper, Julia Walsh (San Diego) made two second half saves for Assumption.
-The first 10 minutes of overtime saw three shots by the Hawks and two by the Greyhounds. The two teams remained tied at one heading into the double overtime period.
-Just over five minutes in, sophomore Olivia Gotobed found the back of the net for the game winner and 2-1 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Saint Anselm outshot Assumption 15-8 over the 105 minutes of play.
-Walsh made six saves in the setback and falls to 1-1 on the season.
-Junior Kate Macaluso made one stop in the victory for the Hawks and improves to 1-0.
-Assumption was awarded six corner kicks while the Hawks were awarded two.
