Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Senior captain Allison Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass.) went 4-for-4 with five runs batted in to help propel the Assumption University softball team to an 8-5 victory over No. 20 Georgian Court on Sunday at the Diamondplex Sports Complex. The Greyhounds also fell to Gannon by a 5-2 score later in the day.
Game One: Assumption 8, No. 20 Georgian Court 5
In Assumption's first game of the day, the Greyhounds and Lions of nationally-ranked Georgian Court traded runs in the first inning. Assumption, which was hitting as the visiting team, got an RBI single from sophomore Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) that plated classmate Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I.) before the Lions responded with the equalizer on a sacrifice fly to right.
Despite falling behind again by scores of 2-1 and 5-2, the Greyhounds were able to rally by scoring at least once in each of the last four innings of play. Ainley sparked the offense with a solo home run to left in the fourth, and even though the Lions got a three-run homer from pinch hitter Elisa Lopez, the Greyhounds were able to even up the score again thanks to a two-run Ainley single through the right side in the top of the fifth.
Assumption took its first lead since the beginning of the game when Geremia reached on an infield error, scoring freshman Mollie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine), and Ainley came through with her fourth and final hit of the game on a single to right center which plated two more runs in the top of the seventh and essentially put the game out of reach.
Senior captain Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) picked up her first win of the season in the circle for Assumption despite allowing 10 hits and five runs which were earned. She also fanned three. Georgian Court reliever Sarah Clancy suffered the loss after yielding 10 hits and seven runs, including five earned, in five frames of work.
Game Two: Gannon 5, Assumption 2
Playing against another perennial contender in its second game of the day, Assumption remained competitive against Gannon. However, the Golden Knights were able to take advantage of a Greyhound error on the first play of the top of the third to establish control.
The Golden Knights plated four runs, which were all unearned, beginning when Dietrick singled to left with runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by Nicole Bush for what could have been the third out of the inning doubled the margin before the inning continued with an RBI double by Kristina DeMattel and an RBI single off the bat of Lily Gfeller.
Assumption didn't give up or go away quietly, as the team quickly responded by scoring twice in the bottom of the third to slash the deficit in half. Batting with the bases loaded, Mahan belted a two-run single down the left field line. However, hurler Gabi Vasi recovered and induced two flyouts to end the threat.
Gannon (1-1) was then able to add an insurance run by plating Krause on a passed ball from third in its half of the sixth. Even though the Greyhounds were able to get more runners on base, which included a leadoff double by Geremia in the bottom of the fifth, they were unable to get a string of hits or key plays needed to rally. Tatone picked up her first save of the season by inducing a groundout and striking out two in the last inning to also seal the Golden Knights' first win of the young season.
Vasi got the victory in the circle for Gannon for striking out three, walking two, and allowing two runs, including one earned, along with five hits. Tatone earned the save for pitching two scoreless frames in which she did not yield a hit. Assumption freshman Anna Tassone (Gardner, Mass.) was charged with the loss after giving up six hits and four runs that were all unearned.
Assumption (1-4) will play two more games tomorrow when it faces Wilmington at 10 a.m. and Charleston at 12:15 p.m.
