Game One: Assumption 6, Wilmington 2
Just like yesterday, Assumption started the morning with a win to start off on a positive note with senior captain Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) in the circle. After the Wildcats scored the game's initial run in the bottom of the first, the Greyhounds scored all six of their runs in the top of the third and never looked back.
With runners on second and third and only one out, Dwyer sent a shot up the middle which plated a pair of runs. Sophomore Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I.) followed with an RBI single to center field, scoring Dwyer, and she scored on the next play courtesy of a double down the left field line by senior captain Allison Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass.) which made it 4-1. Sophomores Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Abigail Larson (Marlborough, Mass.) sent in insurance runs before pitcher Haley Downin induced a lineout to end the threat. Assumption ended the big inning with six runs on seven hits.
The Wildcats tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly by Emma Zimmerman in the fourth, but that was as close as they would come. Barry allowed just one hit over the final three innings, which allowed the Greyhounds to eventually come away with the four-run victory.
Barry picked up her second straight win in the circle by going the distance. She gave up five hits and two runs, which were both earned, while also striking out three and walking two. Downin took the loss for yielding nine hits and six runs, including five earned, in seven frames of work.
Game Two: Charleston 7, Assumption 4
In the Greyhounds' second game of the day against Charleston, the offenses exploded in the early going and combined for eight of the game's 11 runs in the first 1.5 frames.
Despite giving up a two-run single in the top of the first, Assumption quickly responded by capitalizing on three Golden Knight infield errors on three consecutive plays. Larsen helped give the Greyhounds their first lead by reaching on a fielder's choice which plated sophomore Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.).
Charleston, however, had a response of its own and scored three times in the second to retake control of the game. A two-run double by Kendall Marshall broke a 3-3 tie and put the Golden Knights ahead.
Neither team scored between the third and sixth innings, but the Greyhounds remained competitive and gave themselves several chances to retake the lead by placing runners on second and third twice. However, in each instance, Golden Knight pitcher Danielle Bauer got out of the jams by inducing a lineout in the third and a flyout to center in the fifth.
After Charleston (1-4) scored two more runs on a Gracie Donato single in the top of the seventh, Assumption had one last chance in the bottom of the frame and got its offense going when Geremia reached on an error and advanced to second on the botched play, and made it over to third on a passed ball with no outs.
Geremia came home on a fielder's choice play to make it 7-4, but that was as close as the Greyhounds would come. With runners on first and second and one down, the Golden Knights converted a double play by getting the force at third and throwing out Larsen at first.
Bauer earned the win in the circle for Charleston by striking out seven and allowing four hits along with four runs that were all unearned over all seven frames. Sophomore Catherine Higgins (Medway, Mass.) of Assumption suffered the setback after giving up seven runs, including six earned, and six hits in seven innings of work.
Assumption (2-5) has tomorrow off and will return to the Diamondplex to face Fairmont State and Nova Southeastern on Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m.
