Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Assumption University softball team dropped both of its games in five innings to Fairmont State and Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. The Greyhounds were first set back by the Fighting Falcons, 13-5, before coming up short against the Sharks by an 8-0 score.
Game One: Fairmont State 13, Assumption 5 (5 innings)
Fairmont State (2-4) scored three times in the first inning before recording an out and 10 times overall by primarily capitalizing on three early Greyhound errors. Emily Riggs singled up the middle to plate the first and only earned run of the opening frame before Peyton Wetherholt drove in a combined three runs on two separate at-bats.
The Fighting Falcons extended their lead to 12-0 by scoring twice in the second, but the Greyhounds did not give up and started to come back in the top half of the third. Batting with runners on first and second, sophomore Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) hit an RBI single to left center before classmate Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) followed with an RBI single of her own.
Assumption added three more runs in the fourth, beginning with what was called a ground-rule RBI double to right by junior captain Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I.). However, the Greyhounds would come no closer. A bases-loaded walk issued to Jordan Popowski in the bottom of the fifth ended the game due to the eight-run rule.
Shelby Reed picked up the win for Fairmont State (2-4) in the circle despite surrendering five runs, which were all earned, to go along with six hits and four walks. Senior captain Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) suffered the loss for Assumption by allowing eight runs, but just one earned, in a third of an inning. She recorded a strikeout and issued one walk.
Game Two: Nova Southeastern 8, Assumption 0 (5 Innings)
Later in the day, Assumption faced a speedy and aggressive base running Nova Southeastern team which it remained competitive with through four innings of play. However, a six-run fifth was too much for the Greyhounds to overcome.
Batting the bases loaded against a new pitcher, a balk was called which allowed all of the Sharks to advance a base and send home Allie Janowiak. Sydney Legeyre and Ryleigh Langwell then followed with two-run singles to put the game out of reach.
Katelyn Ellard earned the victory for Nova Southeastern (10-7) after pitching five scoreless frames and only allowing three hits. She also struck out and walked three batters. Sophomore Samantha Hardwick (Albany, N.Y.) suffered the loss for yielding nine hits and six earned runs in 4.2 innings.
Assumption (2-7) will look to get back on track when it faces Pittsburg State and Cedarville tomorrow afternoon at 12:15 and 2:30 p.m.
