Box Score 2 ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Assumption University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Molloy on Sunday afternoon at Bob Klein Field. The Greyhounds first fell by a 4-2 score before ending the day with a 10-0 setback in five frames.
Game One: Molloy 4, Assumption 2
Assumption struck first in the opener. After freshman Mackenzie Bruggeman (Trumbull, Conn.) singled down the left field line, classmate Mollie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) took a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left center to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 advantage. The blast was also the first collegiate home run of the freshman's career.
Molloy (5-10) threatened and was able to slice the lead in half when Alex Burns hit a two-out RBI single to right in the bottom half of the same frame, but senior catcher Allison Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass.) got the Greyhounds out of the inning by gunning down the Lion left fielder when she attempted to steal second.
After the Greyhounds went down in order in the top of the third, the Lions continued to swing their bats and scored twice in the bottom of the third and once in the fourth to take control of the game. An infield fielding error for what could have been the final out prolonged the third inning, and the hosts capitalized on it by getting back-to-back RBI singles from Karsyn Eaton and Marissa Nicoletti. Pitcher Courtney Greene then drove in an insurance run to help herself out in the fourth by hitting a deep ball off the left field wall with runners on first and second.
The Greyhounds had their chances in the late innings to rally, but they couldn't answer back. They stranded a runner on third in the fifth, and when they tying run came to the plate in the top of the seventh with two down, Greene was able to induce a groundout to short that ended it.
After pitching five consecutive scoreless innings to close out the game, Greene picked up the victory in the circle for Molloy and improved to 3-5. She surrendered four hits, two runs which were earned, issued two walks, and fanned seven. Senior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) took the loss and dropped to 3-4 by giving up four runs, including one earned, and eight hits. She also struck out three Lions.
Game Two: Molloy 10, Assumption 0 (5 innings)
Molloy's momentum from the first game carried over into the second game of the day. After earning the win in the circle to start the day, Greene was the difference with her bat in the nightcap by going yard twice and driving in three runs. She blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first followed by a three-run shot the next time she came up in the second.
Assumption had its best chance to get on the board when it loaded the bases in the fourth. But after sophomore Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) singled to center and eventually made her way over to third, she was gunned down at home on a force for the second out. The next Greyhound struck out looking in another bases-loaded situation, and the Lions were able to come away with the shutout victory.
Amanda King, who also hit a solo homer in the second inning, earned the win in the circle for Molloy and moved to 2-4 on the season for pitching four scoreless frames. She allowed four hits, recorded four strikeouts, and issued just one walk. Sophomore Samantha Hardwick (Albany, N.Y.) took the loss and dropped to 0-2 for Assumption after yielding five hits and seven runs, which were all earned, in 1.2 innings of work.
Assumption (3-12) will next travel to face Bridgeport for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The first game is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
