Box Score 2 BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Assumption University softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Bridgeport by scores of 11-0 in five innings and 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
Game One: Bridgeport 11, Assumption 0 (5 innings)
With Kaite Burawski in full control in the circle, Bridgeport (12-7) scored in every inning and beginning with plating two runs in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch along with a bases-loaded walk. The Purple Knights' biggest inning came in the third when they notched five runs, which was capped by an RBI single to left by Kalea Faulk with the bases full.
Assumption got some life in the top of the fifth when freshman Mollie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) blasted a leadoff double to left field. However, Burawski retired the next three batters to seal the 11-run victory for the hosts.
Burawksi earned the victory for Bridgeport by pitching five shutout innings in which she only yielded one hit to improve her record to 7-4. She also struck out 11. Senior Mia Patriacca (Newton, Mass.) was charged with the loss for Assumption after giving up five hits and eight runs, which were all earned, and issuing nine walks in 2.2 innings of work. She fell to 0-2 this spring.
Game Two: Bridgeport 5, Assumption 4
Assumption came out stronger in the nightcap and built up a 3-0 lead in the first two innings. Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Greyhounds on the board in the first, and senior Allison Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass.) blasted a two-run double to the gap in left center an inning later. Junior Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I.) and Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I.), who doubled and walked, respectively, scored on Ainley's hit to put the visitors in control.
Bridgeport, however, scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to seize the lead. Madison D'Amato belted a two-run double, and two batters later, Taylor Yates hit a two-run single to push the Purple Knights ahead.
After Bridgeport tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth by capitalizing on an error, Assumption made one last threat in the top of the seventh which began with Dwyer drawing a leadoff walk and Geremia following with a single. Ainley then walked and Mahan grounded out to short, scoring Dwyer and placing the go-ahead run in scoring position. However, Burawski got herself out of the jam by inducing a flyout and registering another strikeout to end the game.
Erin Lifrirei, who entered the game as a reliever in the second, earned the victory for Bridgeport by throwing 2.1 shutout innings in which she allowed just one hit and recorded one strikeout. Burawski, who stepped into the circle in the fourth frame, picked up a save for pitching three strong innings to close out the game. Senior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) of Assumption took the loss and fell to 3-5, as she yielded five runs, including four earned, and eight hits while striking out three and issuing a pair of walks.
Assumption (3-14) will next begin Northeast-10 Conference action when it visits Southern Connecticut State for a twinbill on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon.
