Box Score WATCH A POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH HALEY ROSE AND JILL GOOD
NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Senior Jill Good (North Andover, Mass.) factored into seven goals, which included the game-winning marker, in leading the No. 19 Assumption University women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 18-17 comeback victory over No. 18 Stonehill on Wednesday evening.
Stonehill (6-2, NE10 4-1), which entered the match undefeated in conference play, burst out to a 5-0 advantage in the opening seven minutes and controlled the first quarter. Senior Jill Good (North Andover, Mass.) put the Greyhounds on the board by finishing a pass from senior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine) in transition, but the Skyhawks answered back with three of the game's next four goals to take a commanding 8-2 advantage by the first break.
The Greyhounds, however, came storming back in the second quarter. Now beginning to win draws after coming up nearly empty in the first, the visitors only yielded goals during the second frame when competing down a player. Sophomore Ella Tenney (Braintree, Mass.), who scored the team's first goal of the second frame, kickstarted a streak of six unanswered markers by finding Good for her second of five goals in the contest at 8:44.
Jakobs then netted a free position attempt to make it 9-7 at the 6:07 mark and assisted on a marker scored by sophomore Isabelle Edwards (Gloucestershire, United Kingdom) from just outside of the crease to tie the game at 9s with exactly 53 seconds remaining. Stonehill regained the lead when Kayla Conway picked up the rebound off her own miss and scored on the extra opportunity with 26.9 seconds left, but the Greyhounds would still carry most of the momentum along with confidence heading into recess.
Despite losing the opening draw of the second half, senior netminder Allie Collins (Natick, Mass.) came through with a point-blank save against Kendall Fressle to keep it a one-goal game and commence what would be an evenly matched third quarter. At the other end, graduate student Alison Foley (Walpole, Mass.) evaded a defender, spinned through traffic, and scored her first goal of the game at the 12:54 mark to tie the game a second time.
Stonehill, however, would not surrender the lead and gained separation again when Lilly Leach most notably won a draw, raced 50 yards, and scored on her own to make it 14-11 with 7:26 left in the third and prompting a Greyhound timeout. The Skyhawks also got another score off the stick of Conway and led 15-13 through 45 minutes of play.
Assumption (4-4, NE10 2-2) once again would not go away in the fourth and came back to tie the game again when Jakobs converted another free position attempt with 11:01 mark. Despite losing the ensuing draw, the Greyhounds were able to get a stop and convert on the other end to earn their first lead of the game. After graduate student Haley Rose (Wading River, N.Y.) helped force a Skyhawks turnover, Jakobs scooped up the ground ball and started a fast break for the visitors. She then found Foley, who created her own shot by evading multiple defenders to make it 16-15 with 9:51 left.
A five-hole shot by Foley with 7:36 on the clock kept the Greyhounds ahead, and a successful cut down the middle by Edwards made it 18-16 with 5:44 on the clock.
Stonehill sliced the margin in half and had a golden opportunity to tie the game when Leach was awarded a free position with under three minutes on the clock. However, Rose, Jakobs, and Collins all disrupted the play to force Leach to turn the ball over before she could get a shot off.
Another Stonehill possession was thwarted by the Greyhound defense, and the visitors gained possession and called a timeout with 1:37 left. Assumption then cleared the ball into its offensive end and successfully maintained possession until the shot clock ran out with seconds left, which prevented the Skyhawks from having enough time to go the length of the field and tie the score. The final whistle sounded shortly afterwards, allowing the Greyhounds to survive and earn the one-goal victory.
Good paced Assumption, which won the ground ball battle 23-20, by registering her seven points on five goals and two helpers. Junior Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) won five draw controls and caused two turnovers, while Foley and Jakobs each contributed three goals and two assists. Junior Kaylee Hubbard (Nashua, N.H.) and Rose each caused two turnovers defensively, and Collins finished with 10 saves.
Emma Sullivan led five host players who at least netted a hat trick by finding the back of the net five times for Stonehill, which had a 34-31 advantage in total shots and won 25 of the 39 draw controls in the setback. She also won 10 draws, picked up four ground balls, and caused two turnovers. Conway had three goals and two assists, and Leach finished the game with 11 draw controls and three goals. Sarah Faley matched Collins' saves mark with 10.
Assumption will return home to next face American International College on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.
