Box Score 2 JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. – Sophomore Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and senior captain Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) hurled seven strong innings in leading the Assumption University softball team to a 7-3 victory over Holy Family on Friday at the Auburndale Complex. The Greyhounds also dropped a game to Minnesota-Duluth later in the day by a 3-2 decision.
Game One: Assumption 7, Holy Family 3
Sheerin scored the first run of the game for the Greyhounds on an RBI double by freshman Mollie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) in the bottom of the second and then doubled the team's lead by hitting a sacrifice fly to center an inning later which plated sophomore Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I.).
After Holy Family (2-7) got on the board in the fourth, Assumption pulled away by scoring five times in the fifth frame. Sophomore Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) and freshman Mackenzie Bruggeman (Trumbull, Conn.) each hit two-run singles up the middle to lead the way for the Greyhounds, who shook off a two-run homer by the Tigers in the sixth to come away with the four-run win.
Barry went the distance in the circle to earn the victory for Assumption. She allowed four hits and three runs, which were all earned, while striking out nine. Ashley Remington suffered the setback for Holy Family by giving up five hits and two runs, which were both earned, issuing four walks, and recording two strikeouts.
Game Two: Minnesota-Duluth 3, Assumption 2
In its final game in Florida, Assumption started on a high note by scoring one run in the top of the first and threatening to add more. Junior captain Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I.) belted a leadoff double to left and then came home two plays later on a single through the right side by senior captain Allison Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass.).
But with the bases loaded, the Bulldogs got two key outs when an infield fly rule was called along with obstruction by the base runner heading for third. Pitcher Sam Pederson then struck out the next Greyhound to get out of the inning.
The game remained either tied or with one team ahead by one run the rest of the way. After Minnesota-Duluth's Elle Potts hit a home run in the second and Bender registered an RBI single in the third, the Greyhounds came right back and tied the game at 2-2 when sophomore Samantha Hardwick (Albany, N.Y.) blasted her first collegiate home run over the fence in center.
Minnesota-Duluth (10-1), however, found a way to get the eventual game-winning run home by making the most of a passed ball. With two down and pinch runner Dea Deleon in scoring position, Jordyn Thomas blasted a ball that ricocheted off the leg of the Greyhounds' first baseman and allowed Deleon to come home.
Assumption threatened in the top of the seventh by placing runners at first and second with one out, but reliever Christin Hartman got herself out of trouble by inducing two straight popups to end the game.
Pederson earned the victory for throwing five innings in which she allowed five hits and two runs while striking out four and not issuing a walk. Hartman earned the save for throwing two scoreless frames of relief. Assumption freshman Anna Tassone (Gardner, Mass.) took the loss for yielding seven hits and three runs, which were all earned, and fanning four.
Assumption (3-10) will return to New England and is next slated to visit Staten Island for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
