Box Score 2 NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Sophomores Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) and Kali Scirocco (Upton, Mass.) combined to go 7-for-7 from the plate and freshman Anna Tassone (Gardner, Mass.) picked up her second straight win in the circle as the Assumption University softball team defeated Stonehill, 3-1, in the nightcap of a road doubleheader to salvage another split of a Northeast-10 Conference twinbill on Tuesday afternoon. The Skyhawks took the opener by a 4-3 score in eight innings by coming from behind twice.
Game One: Stonehill 4, Assumption 3 (8 Innings)
Fresh off a thrilling walk-off victory over conference leader Adelphi on Sunday, Assumption's momentum continued into Tuesday afternoon's opener against Stonehill. The Greyhounds opened in the scoring in the top of the second when Scirocco hit a two-run double through the right side.
The Skyhawks, however, clawed back and eventually forced extras by scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Courtney Brochu blasted an RBI double to right field with just one out, and May Dawes hit a one-run single to tie the score two plays later.
After ending the seventh inning with a double play to force extras, Assumption regained the lead in the top of the eighth. With two runners in scoring position courtesy of a Mahan single followed by a double by Makenzie Bruggeman (Trumbull, Conn.), sophomore Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice to bring home the go-ahead run.
But after stranding two more runners that could have provided insurance, the Greyhounds were unable to close out in the bottom of the eighth. Alexandra Hammond set the tone with a leadoff double and was then plated on a sacrifice fly.
Despite being down to their last out, the Skyhawks were then able to end the game in walk-off fashion when Kelly kept the inning alive with a double of her own and then crossed the plate on a single to left.
Both pitchers went the distance to pick up the win and the loss in the contest. Skylar Brandemarte of Stonehill was the victor and moved to 7-7 despite giving up nine hits and three runs, which were all earned, in eight innings of work. Assumption senior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) suffered the setback after surrendering 12 hits and four runs, which were all earned, while striking out two and walking three.
Game Two: Assumption 3, Stonehill 1
Assumption once again scored first in the nightcap and then maintained its lead for the remainder of the contest with Tassone in control of the circle. After stranding a runner in the first, the Greyhounds got on the board in the second when Scirocco singled in Sheerin, who led off the inning with a hit to right field.
The visitors then tacked on an insurance run in the fourth and fifth frames. Scirocco kept her bat hot by homering to left to double the margin before Mahan rocketed a double to right which scored junior Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I.).
Stonehill (9-15, NE10 5-7) made an effort to rally from behind again when Alyssa Grossi singled and then scored on a M. Dwyer double to right with one out, but that was as close as the hosts could come. Tassone induced a flyout to right and a popup to second to end the game and give the Greyhounds the win.
Tassone earned the win to improve to 2-3 for Assumption by giving up just one run which was earned and four hits in seven innings. She also struck out two Skyhawks and did not issue a walk. Kelly Mayette took the loss for Stonehill and dropped to 2-8 for surrendering 11 hits and three runs that were all earned. She fanned five and walked just one.
Assumption (8-19, NE10 5-5) will remain on the road to next face Le Moyne for a twinbill beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
