Softball Sweeps NE10 Doubleheader Against Saint Rose On The Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALBANY, N.Y. – Sophomore Samantha Hardwick (Albany, N.Y.) picked up her first win of the season in the circle and classmate Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) drove in a combined three runs in leading the Assumption University softball team to a twinbill sweep of Saint Rose on Monday afternoon. The Greyhounds won by scores of 3-2 and 7-6 to move into a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings.

Game One: Assumption 3, Saint Rose 2

In the opener, Assumption scored twice in the top of the first and never trailed. Junior Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I.) drew a leadoff walk and then scored with two outs when freshman Mackenzie Bruggeman (Trumbull, Conn.) went yard for the third time this season.

With Isabella Milazzo settling down in the circle following a tough first inning, Saint Rose climbed back into the game by scoring once in the fourth and another time in the sixth to tie things up. Batting with the bases loaded and one out, Alexandra Deeter hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate the Golden Knights' first run. Two frames later, another sacrifice fly by Deeter made it 2-2.

Assumption, however, recovered and was able to push ahead the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh. After sophomore Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I.) hit a single to third which loaded the bases with two outs, classmate Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to force in Kali Scirocco (Upton, Mass.). Hardwick was then able to throw a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

Hardwick picked up her first victory of the season for Assumption and improved to 1-3. She allowed five hits, struck out one, walked four, and yielded two runs which were earned. Milazzo, who also went the distance, took the loss and fell to 5-9 after surrendering three runs, which were all earned, and six hits. She issued three walks and fanned three Greyhound batters.

Game Two: Assumption 7, Saint Rose 6

Assumption continued to find different ways to manufacture runs in the nightcap. Like the opener, the Greyhounds scored twice in the top of the first and never trailed. Dwyer, who belted a leadoff double, came home on a fielder's choice play when Mahan put the ball in play, and then Mahan came home on a wild pitch thrown by Breen.

A double to right by Madison Chandler sliced the Greyhound lead in half in the bottom of the first, but the visitors responded in the top of the third with Dwyer starting the offense again and Mahan driving her home.

Saint Rose (11-24, NE10 7-11) wouldn't go away and took its first lead of the entire afternoon by plating two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Capitalizing on an error, Milazzo hit an RBI triple to tie the score at 3-3 before Houghtaling sent home the go-ahead tally on a sacrifice fly as a pinch hitter.

Assumption, however, battled back by scoring the tying run on a Dwyer RBI single to right in the sixth and tacking on three more in the seventh. With two runners in scoring position, sophomore Abigail Larson (Marlborough, Mass.) delivered the big blow by slicing a triple to left field.

Even though the Golden Knights were able to answer with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, freshman hurler Anna Tassone (Gardner, Mass.) got out of the jam and closed out the game by inducing a popup to second with nobody on base to end the game.

Tassone held on to earn her fourth straight victory for Assumption to move her record ahead to 4-3 overall. She allowed nine hits and just one earned run over seven innings while also striking out three and only issuing one walk.

Assumption (11-20, NE10 8-6) is next slated to play in Worcester for the first time this season when it hosts Bentley for a twinbill on Thursday afternoon. The first pitch will be at 3 p.m. on the campus of Worcester State.
