Softball Drops Both Ends Of NE10 Twinbill To Pace

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Assumption University softball team came up short in both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Pace on Tuesday afternoon. The Setters took the first game, 11-4, and won the second by a 5-3 decision.

Game One: Pace 11, Assumption 4

Pace, which was batting as the visiting team on the scoreboard, burst out to a 9-0 lead in the opener by taking advantage of two errors before the Greyhounds had their first chance on offense. Gwen Pedersen started the big inning for the Setters with an RBI hit and also capped the scoring with a two-run single to left field.

Assumption plated one run in the first when junior Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I.) tripled and scored on a throwing error by the Setter right fielder and tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth. But after Dwyer scored again on an error to make it 9-4 at the time, Pace added an insurance run in the fifth and sixth frames to pull away for good.

Anna Acevedo of Pace earned the win to improve to 7-2 this spring by allowing just three runs, including one earned, and five hits while striking out three in four innings of relief. Senior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) suffered the loss for Assumption and fell to 8-10 after surrendering nine runs, including four earned, in less than an inning of work.

Game Two: Pace 5, Assumption 3

Even though Pace still scored first, the nightcap was most tightly contested throughout. The Setters scored twice in the top of the first courtesy of a two-run single by Iverson, but Assumption was able to quickly come back and slice the deficit in half in the bottom of the third. After Dwyer singled and stole second, the junior captain came home when sophomore Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) hit a single to right.

After both teams failed to push across any runs in the fourth, Assumption was able to knot up the board in the fifth frame with Dwyer and Mahan once again factoring into the scoring. Dwyer, who reached first this time on an error and advanced to second on the throw, came home when Mahan crushed a double to right center.

Pace (27-12, NE10 14-8) answered right back, however, and moved ahead again by plating three runs in its half of the sixth. NancyAnn Revilla hit an RBI single and then came home on a double by Pedersen to make it 4-2. Then with the bases loaded three batters later, a single to center by Brittany Walkingst pushed another run across.

The Greyhounds responded when sophomore Kali Scirocco (Upton, Mass.) went yard in the bottom of the sixth, but they could get no closer. Dwyer reached base again by being issued a walk in the seventh, but she was stranded at second when the tying run at the plate grounded out.

Mackenzie Garrick earned the win in the circle for Pace to move ahead to 5-5 after yielding eight hits and three runs, including two earned, and registering two strikeouts over six frames. Freshman Anna Tassone (Gardner, Mass.) suffered the setback for Assumption and ended the day with a 4-5 ledger. She registered two strikeouts, did not issue a walk, and gave up eight hits and five runs, which were all earned, in 5.1 innings of work.

Assumption (14-25, NE10 11-11) will return to Central Massachusetts to next host Franklin Pierce for a twinbill on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. The games are slated to take place on the campus of Worcester State.
