WORCESTER, Mass. – Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) went yard in the opener and classmate Abigail Larson (Marlborough, Mass.) hit a grand slam in the nightcap as the Assumption University softball team swept a doubleheader against Saint Michael's on Senior Day at WPI. After recognizing their four-member senior class, the Greyhounds won the opener, 10-3, and the nightcap by a 6-1 decision to punch their ticket to the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.

Game One: Assumption 10, Saint Michael's 3

Saint Michael's (10-29, NE10 6-20) got off to a strong start following the senior day festivities by scoring twice in the top of the first inning of the opener. Jenna Devans hit a two-run double to right to put the Purple Knights on the scoreboard.

But after the rough frame to start, it was all Greyhounds from there. Sophomore Corin Mahan (Abington, Mass.) hit an RBI single to center to slice the deficit in half, freshman Mackenzie Bruggeman (Trumbull, Conn.) put the hosts ahead with a two-run single, and Sheerin added insurance with a two-run homer to make it 5-2.

Beginning with a bomb over the fence by sophomore Lauren Geremia (North Providence, R.I.), the Greyhounds put the game away by scoring four more times in the fourth inning. Following RBI hits by Sheerin and sophomore Kali Scirocco (Upton, Mass.), senior captain Allison Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass.) capped the scoring with a triple to right field.

Senior Erin Barry (Braintree, Mass.) earned the victory in the circle for Assumption and improved to 9-11 by striking out four and allowing just three runs that were all earned along with five hits. Jackie Cherry of Saint Michael's suffered the loss after surrendering five hits and six runs, which were all earned, over two innings of work.

Game Two: Assumption 6, Saint Michael's 1

The teams traded runs at the beginning of the nightcap, as Assumption's Bruggeman singled in junior Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I.) before the Purple Knights' Jenna Hoops went yard in the top of the second.

A pitcher's duel ensued during the middle innings between Jenna Devens of Saint Michael's along with senior Giuliana Pierce (Pittsfield, Mass.) and freshman Anna Tassone (Gardner, Mass.) of Assumption. However, it was the Greyhounds that broke through offensively next. Larson reached on a sacrifice bunt to plate the go-ahead run in the fourth and then followed with a grand slam home run in the fifth frame to put the Purple Knights away.

Tassone earned the win for Assumption by throwing four scoreless innings of relief. She moved ahead to 5-5 after striking out three, yielding just one hit, and not issuing a walk. Devens took the loss for Saint Michael's after giving up six hits and six runs, including five earned, while going the distance. She also fanned five and walked seven.

Assumption (17-26, NE10 14-12) earned the sixth seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament and will next host Bentley in the opening round on Tuesday at a time and location to be determined.
