Adelphi 10, Assumption 5
Worcester, Mass. -- The Assumption Baseball team took a tough 10-5 loss to the visiting Panthers of Adelphi University on Sunday at the Rochleau Field on the Assumption campus.
The Greyhounds got off to a tough start as the Panthers scored six runs in the first three innings, led by senior catcher Richard McCarren (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford/Nassau CC), who had two hits and three RBI. Adelphi kept the pressure on throughout the game with eight stolen bases. Senior outfielder and leadoff man Omar Velazquez (Astoria, N.Y./Long Island City/Caldwell College) had an inside the park home run in the top of the seventh, the last of his three runs on the day. Velazquez also had two RBI. Senior starting pitcher Jonathan Gonzalez (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes/Monroe) pitched seven strong innings with nine strikeouts, giving up only two earned runs.
For the Greyhounds, senior first baseman Drew Dombkowski (Southampton, Mass. / Hampshire) had two RBI, and junior third baseman Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) walked three times. Sophomore second baseman Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech) had two hits, scored two runs and had an RBI. Senior relief pitcher Nick Peters (Natick, Mass. / Catholic Memorial) had three strikeouts in one inning.
Assumption falls to 5-11 with a 2-1 record in the Northeast-10, while Adelphi is now 13-7-1 with a 3-2 conference record. Assumption is back in action on Monday, March 28th as the Greyhounds head to Merrimack College.
