Assumption 8, Concordia 2
Auburndale, Fla. -- The Assumption Greyhounds Baseball team picked
up its first win of the season against Concordia University of New
York on Saturday with an 8-2 victory.
Junior second baseman Travis Smith (Coventry,
RI/Bishop Hendricken) had four RBI on three hits including a
two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth that made it 5-2.
Senior outfielder Blake Youngblood (East Freetown,
MA/New Bedford) had two RBI and two hits. Seven different
Greyhounds would score.
For the Clippers, junior shortstop Yonatan
Rodriguez (Tarrytown, NY/Sleepy Hollow) opened the game
with a home run, and freshman left fielder James
Anderson (Barrie, Ontario, Canada/St. Peters Secondary)
had an RBI single in the second.
After giving up runs in the first two innings, senior pitcher
Joe Green (Worcester, MA/Saint John's) quickly
settled down for Assumption, pitching five shutout innings and
totalling seven strikeouts. Freshman pitcher Michael
Pendergast (Unionville, CT/Farmington) had two shutout
innings in relief.
Assumption is now 1-1 on the season and plays twice on Sunday,
first against Northeast-10 Conference rival Bentley in the morning
and in the afternoon in a rematch against
Concordia.
