Greyhounds Split with Golden Knights

Albany, N.Y. -- The Assumption College baseball team split their double-header at the College of Saint Rose on Thursday evening at Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany, New York, winning game one, 14-5, before dropping game two, 12-7.

The Greyhounds lineup exploded in game one, with senior outfielder Mike Foley (Worcester, Mass./Saint John 's) hitting an RBI sacrifice fly to score sophomore second baseman Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) to give Assumption a 1-0 lead in the first. Then in the second, Keddy would hit his own sacrifice fly, scoring sophomore designated hitter Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass./Boston College) and senior centerfielder Blake Youngblood (East Freetown, Mass./New Bedford), giving Assumption a 3-0 lead. The Hounds completely broke the game open in the third, scoring six runs, capped off by a three-run home run by senior outfielder Wally Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass./Holy Name). Assumption would never trail in the game. Keddy finished two-for-five with five RBI. Derosier finished four-for-six with three RBI and two stolen bases.

Game two began with equal promise, with Derosier scoring in the top of the first on a muffed throw and junior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's) hitting an RBI single to bring home Foley, giving Assumption a 2-0 lead. The Golden Knights responded in the second, scoring five runs, capped off by a two RBI double by junior shortstop Alex Ferenti (Deerfield, N.Y./ Whitesboro) and a two RBI single by freshman centerfielder Brian Maynard (Lynn, Mass. / Lynn English). The Golden Knights would score three more runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead, and the Greyhounds would never threaten. For Assumption, junior third baseman Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) was three-for-five with two RBI, while Youngblood went two-for-four with two RBI. For the Golden Knights, Maynard would finish two-for-five with three RBI for the game. Saint Rose capitalized on four Assumption errors.

With the split, Assumption is now 12-23 with a 6-10 record in the Northeast-10, while Saint Rose now stands at 13-22 and 6-12 in the conference. The Hounds take to the road on Tuesday as they head to the University of New Haven.
