New Haven, Conn. -- The Assumption College baseball team squandered a strong performance by its pitching staff, losing 2-1 at the University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.
Sophomore pitcher Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn./Nathan Hale Ray) and freshman pitcher Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) combined to give up only two earned runs, with Rocha recording two innings of perfect pitching. Junior first baseman Brendan Picini (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) had an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to score the Greyhounds only run.
Picini's sacrifice was the only blemish for senior starting pitcher Matt Sommo (Clinton, Conn./Morgan), who had nine strikeouts in eight innings for the Chargers. Sophomore second baseman Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) and junior shortstop Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) each had RBI singles that were all New Haven needed.
The Chargers improved to 20-14 overall and 8-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. Assumption fell to 12-25 overall and 6-12 in conference play. The Greyhounds look to rebound on Wednesday as they host American International.
