Worcester, Mass. -- For the second time in three days, the Assumption College baseball team lost 2-1 against the University of New Haven, this time at home on Thursday. The Greyhounds also lost by that same score to the Chargers at New Haven on Tuesday.
Senior pitcher Alex Smith (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) had a strong start for New Haven, recording seven strikeouts in six innings and giving up only one run. The Chargers bullpen held up, allowing only two Greyhound base-runners in three innings. Senior pitcher Mitch Rossi (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) recorded his ninth save of the season. Junior outfielder David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep/St. Anselm College) went two-for-three with an RBI single and the Chargers took advantage of three Assumption fielding errors, scoring two unearned runs. A Greyhound wild pitch in the top of the seventh scored freshman first baseman DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard), giving New Haven a 1-0 lead before Wirkus' single scored the eventual game-winning run.
Assumption junior starting pitcher Ben Hastings (Norton, Mass./Norton) had a strong outing, pitching six and one-third innings and allowing no earned runs. Junior designated hitter Brendan Picini (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) had an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Greyhounds within one at 2-1. Senior shortstop Shawn Frigon (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) went two-for-four at the plate.
Assumption falls to 13-26 with a 6-13 record in the Northeast-10, while New Haven climbs to 21-14 with a 9-9 conference record. The Greyhounds host Saint Anselm on Saturday in a double-header.
