Rindge, N.H. -- The Assumption College Baseball team split with Franklin Pierce on Sunday, winning game 1 of their double-header, 6-2, before falling 18-5 in game 2.
Game 1 saw Assumption capitalize on the mistakes of Franklin Pierce. Senior starting pitcher Joe Green (Worcester, Mass./Saint John's) pitched 7 1/3 strong innings, giving up just two earned runs. Freshman reliever Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings of no-hit ball to finish the game. Senior leftfielder Wally Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass./Holy Name) hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the fifth, scoring the first run of the game. Freshman outfielder Ross Lincoln (Woodstock, Conn./Woodstock Academy) provided the lone offense for the Ravens with a two-run pinch-hit home run in the top of the 7th. The Greyhounds would take advantage of four errors by the Ravens, scoring three unearned runs. For Assumption, senior centerfielder Blake Youngblood (East Freetown, Mass./New Bedford) went two-for-four on the day with a double, and five Greyhounds would score.
In Game 2, the Greyhound pitching was roughed up. Ravens' senior designated hitter Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) had six RBI going three-for-four, and freshman first baseman Zach Mathieu (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Acad.) went three-for-six with four RBI including a three-run homer to left center field in the top of the ninth. For the Greyhounds, senior shortstop Shawn Frigon (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) went three-for-five, scoring three runs and stealing two bases. Senior right fielder Mike Foley (Worcester, Mass./Saint John 's) had a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the third that gave the Greyhounds a 4-3 lead. The top of the ninth was devastating for Assumption, as the Ravens scored 12 runs.
The Assumption Greyhounds are now 6-14 with a 3-3 record in the Northeast-10. Franklin Pierce's record now stands at 22-6 with an 8-2 record in conference play. Assumption is back at home on Tuesday as they host Southern Connecticut State at 3:30 pm.
