Worcester, Mass. (April 30) -- The Assumption College baseball team dropped a Northeast-10 doubleheader to visiting Saint Anselm on Saturday at Rocheleau Field. The Hounds fell by a 4-1 final in game one, along with a 5-3 defeat in the second game. The Greyhounds fall to 13-28 overall and 6-15 in Northeast-10 play with the sweep.
In game one, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth before the Hounds got on the board with a single run for the 1-0 edge. Brendan Picini (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) led off the inning with a single down the right field line and came home on an RBI double down the left field line by Blake Youngblood (East Freetown, Mass./New Bedford). The Hawks tied the game on a run from pinch hitter Andrew Chandler and scored the game-winning runs on a three-run homer to deep left field by senior catcher Matt Sucharewicz. Joe Green (Worcester, Mass./St. John's) went 7.1 innings for the Hounds in the loss, scattering five hits with eight strikeouts to fall to 5-4 overall. Neil Hesek went the distance for the Hawks, giving up six hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 2-6 on the season.
In the second game, the Hawks jumped on top by a 2-0 margin in the first inning on RBI hits from Sucharewicz and Dan DeCoste, but the Hounds answered back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Senior Shawn Frigon (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) drew a leadoff walk and came home on an RBI single to right field from catcher Tim Quinn (Holden, Mass./St. John's). Robert Kelly extended the Hawk lead with a solo homer to right in the top of the third, but the Greyhounds tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. After the Hounds loaded the bases with one out, RBI singles by Mike Foley (Worcester, Mass./St. John's) and Quinn tied the game up.
The Hawks took the lead for good in the eighth as Chandler got caught in a rundown between first and second base and Dan Lagasse came home from third on the play for the 4-3 lead. Saint Anselm added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI hit from TJ Murphy that scored Kelly for the 5-3 final.
Matt Metcalf (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) took the loss in 1.2 innings of relief, while Joe Latino pitched 4.2 innings of three-hit relief for the win for the Hawks. Metcalf falls to 1-1 overall with the loss, while Latino improves to 3-1 overall.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, May 1st as the Greyhounds travel to Saint Michael's for a doubleheader.
