Southern Connecticut 5, Assumption 4
Worcester, Mass. -- The Assumption College baseball team came close to delivering the visiting Owls of Southern Connecticut to their second loss of the season on Wednesday, but fell just short, losing 5-4.
Assumption capitalized early on mistakes by the Owls. In the bottom of the third, a double-steal of second and home scored senior shortstop Shawn Frigon (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian), giving the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead. Then in the bottom of the sixth, senior leftfielder Wally Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass./Holy Name) advanced to home off a throwing error by the catcher. Two batters later, junior catcher Tim Quinn (Holden, Mass./St. John's) singled, driving in another run to put Assumption up 4-1.
The Owls would come back, however. In the top of the seventh, freshman second baseman T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) hit a two-out three-run home run to right field to tie the game. Then in the top of the eighth, junior third baseman A.J. Rouleau (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) singled in a run to take a 5-4 lead.
Southern Connecticut came into the game with a 22-1 record and ranked #5 in the country, and they leave with a 23-1 record and an 8-1 record in the Northeast-10. Assumption is now 6-15 with a 3-4 conference record. The Hounds are back in action this Thursday as they head to Southern Connecticut.
