Worcester, Mass. -- The Assumption College baseball team took a step back on Saturday, dropping two games to visiting Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 conference double-header.
In game 1, Assumption junior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's) tripled in the bottom of the second, driving in two runs and tying the game at two runs apiece. Stonehill senior pitcher Bryan Galligan (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) quickly regained control after that, however, pitching a complete game and not allowing another Greyhound run. Six Skyhawk hitters drove in runs with junior left fielder Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) leading the way with three hits and two runs scored, totals matched by junior right fielder Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet). Stonehill would prevail 7 to 2.
In game 2, Stonehill jumped off to an early 5-0 lead, capped off by a sacrifice fly ball by White in the top of the second inning. Assumption's senior left fielder Wally Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass./Holy Name) tried to rally the Greyhounds, going four-for-five with two home runs and four RBI. It would not be enough as Stonehill would capitalize on three Assumption errors to score five unearned runs. Junior catcher Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) had two hits and three RBI for the Skyhawks, while sophomore shortstop Mike Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) went three-for-five with two RBI. Assumption second baseman Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) went two-for-four with an RBI. Stonehill would ultimately prevail, 11-5.
Stonehill's record now stands at 22-8 with a 7-3 conference record, while Assumption falls to 6-18 with a 3-7 mark in the Northeast-10 standings. The Greyhounds visit Pace University on Sunday in a 1:00 PM game.
