Springfield, Mass. -- The Assumption College baseball team defeated American International 9-5 in extra innings at AIC Park in Sprinfield on Tuesday.
The game entered extra innings tied at 5-5 when a three-run home run by senior first baseman Drew Dombrowski (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire) gave Assumption an 8-5 lead. Three batters later, senior outfielder Blake Youngblood (East Freetown, Mass./New Bedford) hit an RBI single to left field scored junior designated hitter Brendan Picini (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro). Senior pitcher Joe Green (Worcester, Mass./Saint John's) closed out the Yellow Jackets in order in the bottom of the tenth to secure the victory.
Dombrowski finished with four RBI. Junior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's) went two-for-four with a home run. Picini went two-for-five with two runs scored. The Greyhounds scored ten runs on nine hits, taking advantage of seven walks by AIC pitchers.
Sophomore third baseman Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass. / Hanover) went two-for-five with a home run and three RBI. The Greyhounds were up 5-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth where it scored twice on an RBI-single from senior first baseman Dillon Fontaine (Amenia, N.Y./Hotchkiss) and an RBI-double off the bat of junior right fielder Dennis Duffy (Warwick, R.I./Trinity Christian (Fla.)).
The Greyhounds improved to 16-28 overall and 7-15 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 16-23 overall and 10-13 in conference play. The two teams will meet on Thursday at Assumption for a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
