Box Score North Andover, Mass. (October 17) -- On Thursday night, the Assumption College field hockey team dropped a late 2-1 final to No. 9 ranked Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference action. The game headed into the halftime break tied at 1-1 before the Warriors pulled out the second-half victory.
Merrimack took a 1-0 lead at the 24:22 mark as Candace Waldie tipped in a shot for her 15 goal of the season and the 1-0 lead. Assumption answered though in the final two minutes of the first half though as freshman Meghan Sullivan (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season on a tip-in off the Merrimack goalie to send the game into the half tied at 1-1. Assumption held an 8-5 edge in the first half in shots and had a number of shots prior to the team's tying goal at the 33:04 mark of the first half.
The Warriors tallied the game winner late in regulation at the 61:52 mark as Jessica Otis scored her ninth goal of the season off an assist from Christine Zubkus for the 2-1 final margin. Overall, Assumption held a 16-9 lead in shots over the game.
Senior Heather Philbrick (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) had three saves in the loss, while Madison Davis stopped seven shots in the victory for Merrimack.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 4-10 overall and 0-6 in the Northeast-10, while Merrimack improves to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, October 23rd as the Hounds host American International for a 7:30 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
