Worcester, Mass. (November 8) -- Senior Lauren Ostafin (Avon, Conn. / Avon) posted a double-double to lead the Greyhounds past Pace University by a final score of 3-1 at Laska Gymnasium on Friday evening. The set scores were 25-17, 21-25, 25-16, and 25-20.

The Greyhounds rattled off the first five points of the match as the Greyhounds continued out to an 8-2 lead, forcing Pace University to use a first-set timeout. After the timeout, the Greyhounds continued their strong play, picking up the four straight points to extend the first-set lead to 10, 12-2.

The Setters climbed within six, 14-8, but the Greyhounds took advantage of back-to-back miscues by Pace and didn't look back on the way to the 25-17 victory. Senior Ryan Merle (Skaneateles, N.Y. / Skaneateles) led the Greyhounds with three kills on four attacks in the set.

The Greyhounds rallied from deficits of six, seven, and five on separate occasions to draw within three but could not strike any closer on the way to a 25-21 final. Each team had 13 second-set kills. Ostafin and fellow senior Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas / Glenda Dawson) each had four kills in the set as the Greyhounds rallied but eventually came up just short.

After dropping the second game, the Greyhounds responded with a 25-16 victory in the third game. The Greyhounds hit .263 in the set with 12 kills on only 38 attempts. Junior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) joined Ostafin with three kills in the set as Donahue hit .500 in the set, capitalizing on her six attacks. Setter Kristin Flatekval (Mahwah, N.J. / Immaculate Heart) chipped in two kills on three attempts to help the Greyhounds offense while added 10 assists.

The Greyhounds took the final set by a 25-10 margin at Johnston led the Greyhounds with four kills on nine attacks, hitting .222 in the set. Ostafin continued her strong match with three kills in the final set, hitting .222 as well. Flatekval dished out a match-high 13 assists in the deciding set.

Ostafin finished with 12 kills and 10 digs for the double-double while Johnston and Merle each had nine kills for Assumption. Flatekval had 39 assists to direct the Greyhound offense while senior Jess Reimers (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) led the Greyhounds defensively with 18 digs. Johnston and Flatekval each had 11 digs to rank second on the team while Ostafin's 10 digs ranked third.

The Greyhounds improve to 5-17 with the win and are now 2-11 in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Setters fall to 4-24 overall and are now 0-12 in league play.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, November 16th to close out the season against Saint Anselm College. The match will begin at noon at Laska Gymnasium. Prior to the match, the Greyhounds will honor their senior class for their contributions to the program.
