Box Score Winter Park, Fla. (March 1) -- The Assumption College baseball team kicked off the 2013 season with a 6-5 loss to Rollins College on Friday evening. The Tars rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the ninth inning to pick up their fifth victory of the season, as the Greyhounds fell to 0-1 on the season.
Senior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) went 2-for-4 on the day and had two RBI, while Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y. / John Jay CR) and Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) each had an RBI in the loss.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the sixth, the Greyhounds capitalized on a Tar error to strike twice, tying the game on an RBI single by Smith.
The Greyhounds took their first lead of the game on a sacrifice fly by Lopes, scoring Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass. / Holy Name), who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Tars took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the frame, before the Greyhounds regained the lead in the top of the eighth, using three free passes and two hits.
Junior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech) and senior All-American candidate Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech) started off the inning with back-to-back walks. Smith followed up the walks with an RBI single down the left field line to tie the game.
With two outs in the inning, Filice drew a walk to give the Greyhounds a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
The Tars used a two-run ninth to walk away with the win. Junior Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass. / B.M.C. Durfee) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. The Greyhounds will return to action on March 2 against Saint Anselm College at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. The game will begin at 11 a.m.
