Box Score 2 Smithfield, R.I. (March 28) -- Senior Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass. / Boston College)
propelled the Greyhounds to a game one victory on the way to a split with Saint Anselm College at Conaty Park on Thursday afternoon.
The Greyhounds used a five-run second inning to propel the team to an 11-6 run victory over Saint Anselm College in the first game of the doubleheader.
Napoli went 3-for-3 with five runs scored to highlight a Greyhounds lineup that scored 11 runs. Senior Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and freshman Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) had two hits.
Napoli got the second inning started with a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a single to right field by Lopes. Graduate student Ben Benigno (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull) loaded the bases for Assumption with no outs as he drew a walk.
Junior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn. / Bristol) drew a walk to drive in the Greyhounds first run and give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead. Senior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) doubled to right field, driving in two runs to push the Greyhounds lead to three.
A groundout by Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) pushed across Clark, before senior Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech) hit a sacrifice fly to center for the fifth run of the inning.
The Greyhounds added another run in the third inning to push the lead to six and wouldn't trail the rest of the way.
Sophomore Mitch Kelly (Watertown, Conn. / Watertown) earned the win, pitching six innings of five-run ball. He also walked three while striking out two in the win. The sophomore allowed three runs in the third inning, as the Hawks collected two hits and took advantage of two walks and a hit batsman in the inning, which cut the Assumption lead to three, 6-3. He allowed two more in the sixth inning after the Greyhounds had scored another run to cut the lead to three, 7-4, but that is as close as the Hawks would get.
Assumption scored two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings on the way to the 11-7 victory.
In game two the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Assumption starter Pat Coleman (Newark, Del. / Salesianum). The Greyhounds answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame as Smith led off the inning with a home run to left field. Keddy came around to score on an error after reaching on an error and Lopes provided an RBI single to score Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass. / Holy Name).
The Hawks answered with three runs of their own in the top of the third to the Greyhounds one in the bottom of the frame to lead the score tied after three innings. Coleman gave up another run in the fourth to finish his outing with 3.1 innings pitched, allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out one.
The Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the ninth for a 6-4 final.
The Greyhounds move to 4-13 on the season with the split, while Saint Anselm moves to 8-11-1 on the season.
Assumption will return to action with a doubleheader against Concordia on Saturday, March 30th. The game will begin at Conaty Park at noon.
