Box Score 2 Smithfield, R.I. (March 30) -- Senior Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester
Tech) had a four-hit doubleheader as the Greyhounds split with Concordia University at Conaty Park on Saturday. Keddy reached base six times between the two games to lead the Greyhounds offensively in the split.
Keddy went 3-for-3 with a walk in the first game as the Greyhounds captured an 8-3 victory. Junior Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass. / BMC Durfee) earned the win for Assumption, pitching four innings of four-hit ball while allowing three runs and striking out one.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a five-run lead in the third inning as junior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn. / Bristol Central) got the inning started by reaching on a two-base error by the Concordia shortstop. Senior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) quickly drove him in with an RBI single through the right side to push the Greyhounds in front, 1-0.
Keddy followed that up with a double to score Smith and Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass. / Holy Name) drove in Keddy with a single through the right side to give the Greyhounds a 3-0 advantage. Senior Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass. / Boston College) was the next batter up for the Greyhounds and he doubled to left field, advancing Johnson to third. Following a groundout, senior Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) plated both runners with a single to center, giving Assumption a 5-0 advantage.
After cruising through the first three innings allowing only one hit, Rocha ran into a little trouble in the fourth inning after the Greyhounds long inning. The junior allowed three runs on three hits while walking one in the frame to allow Concordia within two, 5-3.
The Greyhounds answered with two in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Clark and a single run in the sixth as Lopes has an RBI single for the 8-3 final.
Senior Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn. / Nathan Hale Ray) recorded the save for the Greyhounds working three innings out of the bullpen, allowing two hits while striking out three to earn his second save of the season.
In the second game, the Greyhounds dropped a 10-3 final as junior Billy King (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) was the hard luck loser, pitching one inning and allowing one unearned run to pick up his first loss of the season.
Concordia jumped ahead in the bottom of the second off starter Pat Coleman (), who worked two innings allowing two runs on three hits. The Clippers extended the lead to three with a run in the top of the third.
The Greyhounds roared back to tie the score at three with a three-run third inning. Freshman Thomas Paine () got the inning started with an infield single. Smith followed that up with a single down the right field line to advance Paine to second. After a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, Keddy walked to load the bases.
Johnson got the Greyhounds on the board with a sacrifice fly and Smith came around to score on the next play as the centerfielder misplayed a fly ball. Lopes capped the scoring for the Greyhounds with a sacrifice fly to drive in Keddy.
The Clippers took the lead back with a run off King in the fifth and then added three runs in each of the final two innings for the 10-3 final.
Assumption moves to 5-14 on the season with the split and will return to action on April 2nd against American International College. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
