Box Score Winter Park, Fla. (March 5) -- The Assumption College baseball team defeated Saint Anselm College, 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon to earn their first victory of the season at Alfond Stadium.
Sophomore Santi Palmer (San Juan, P.R. / Colegio San Ignacio) pitched six innings of four-hit ball, allowing three runs, but only one earned, to pick up the win.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a three-run second inning and a two-run third inning. Sophomore Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn. / East Catholic), junior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech), and sophomore Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass. / Holy Name) all scored runs in the second inning, while Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) and Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y. / John Jay CR) came around to score for the Greyhounds in the third inning.
The Hawks answered back with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to two, 5-3, before Assumption added an insurance run on an RBI single by Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass. / Northbridge) in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh for the final margin.
O'Donnell went 3-for-6 with two RBI in the game, while senior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) went 2-for-6 with two RBI. Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn. / Bristol Central), Lopes and Sims each had two-hit days for Assumption in the win as the team combined for a season-high 15 hits.
Assumption improves to 1-4 on the season with the win, while Saint Anselm College falls to 2-5-1 on the season with the loss.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Thursday, March 7th against Felician College. The game will begin at 11 a.m. at Alfond Stadium on the campus of Rollins College.
