Box Score 2 Lowell, Mass. (April 1) -- The Assumption College baseball team dropped two games in a
doubleheader with The University of Massachusetts at Lowell at LeLacheur Park on Monday afternoon.
The Greyhounds fall to 5-15 on the season with the losses, while the River Hawks improve to 13-9 on the season with the pair of wins.
The River Hawks took the first game by a 4-1 final as Tyler Toyfair pitched eight innings of five-hit ball, allowing one earned run. He struck out six to earn his first win of the season.
Sophomore Santi Palmer (San Juan, P.R. / Colegio San Ignacio) was the hard luck loser, pitching seven innings while allowing four runs -- three earned – while striking out two to fall to 1-1 on the season.
The Greyhounds scored their lone run in the fifth as added a run as Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn. / Bristol Central) drove in Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass. / Northbridge) to cut the River Hawk lead in half, 2-1. Assumption wouldn't strike again and UMass Lowell added runs in the sixth and seventh innings for the 4-1 final. O'Donnell went 3-for-3 in the loss.
In the second game, the River Hawks used a five-run fourth inning to pull away from the Greyhounds on the way to a 10-4 win. Freshman Tomas Paine (Upton, Mass. / Nipmuc) went 2-for-4 in the loss as the lone Greyhounds with a multi-hit day.
The five-run fourth game UMass Lowell a seven runs lead at the time before Assumption chipped away with a run in the bottom of the frame cut the lead to six, 7-1. The River Hawks added a run in the top of the fifth and two in the sixth to extend the lead to nine, 10-1.
The Greyhounds scored one in the bottom of the seventh and two in the bottom of the ninth for the 10-4 final. Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken), Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass. / Holy Name), Clark, and Paine all scored runs in the loss.
Junior Pat Coleman (Newark, Del. / Salesianum St. Elizabeth) took the loss for Assumption, working four innings while allowing six earned runs. The Greyhound bullpen had a nice afternoon in relief of Coleman, working five innings while allowing five hits and one earned run.
Assumption will return to action on April 2nd against American International College. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
