Box Score Worcester, Mass. (April 10) -- The Assumption College baseball team defeated the College
of Saint Rose by a 4-3 final at Rocheleau Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Mitch Kelly (Watertown, Conn. / Watertown) worked five innings of six-hit ball, allowing one run while striking out two to earn his third win of the season. Senior third baseman Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the win.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Smith hit a one-out double to right field and came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass. / Northbridge).
Assumption added two runs to its lead in the third inning with a two-out rally. Smith started the frame with a single but was eventually thrown out at home on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. Senior Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) restarted the rally with a single down the left field line, putting runners on second and third.
Senior Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass. / Boston College) came through with the clutch hit, driving a double to left center field, extending the Greyhound lead to three.
The Golden Knights cut into the lead with three hits and a Greyhound error in the top of the fourth inning. When the inning ended, the Golden Knights got their lone run against Kelly, and cut the Assumption lead to two, 3-1.
The Greyhounds added an insurance run to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Smith led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error and a wild pitch. He came around to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass. / Holy Name).
After a scoreless sixth, Saint Rose got a run off Assumption reliever Matt Metcalf (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) in the top of the seventh on an RBI ground out. Metcalf worked 1.1 innings in the game, allowing one hit and the one run which brought the score within two, 4-2.
Senior reliever Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn. / Hale Ray) entered the game for Metcalf with two outs in the seventh and got the final out to end a scoring threat.
Bradley came back out for the eighth and allowed a single run to get the score within one, 4-3, after allowing a leadoff triple. He limited the damage after that and worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season. Overall, Bradley worked 2.1 innings while allowing two hits and one run.
The Greyhounds improve to 9-19 on the season, including a 4-1 mark in Northeast-10 Conference divisional action while Saint Rose falls to 5-27 overall including a 2-8 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Greyhounds are one of three teams with a single loss in divisional play.
Assumption will be back in action on Saturday, April 13th at Adelphi University. The team will play a doubleheader on Saturday before concluding the three-game series with a single game on Sunday, April 14th.
