Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. (April 13) -- The Assumption College baseball team split a doubleheader with Adelphi University at Bonomo Field on Saturday.
The Greyhounds took the first game by a 10-3 final before the team dropped a wild 13-12 game in the second half of the doubleheader.
Senior Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech) collected two hits in the second game of the doubleheader to reach the 200-hit plateau for his career. The senior All-American candidate became the 11th Greyhound to reach that total with a single in the top of the seventh inning.
Sophomore Santi Palmer (San Juan, P.R. / Colegio San Ignacio) earned the victory in the first game, working 5.1 innings of three-run ball. The sophomore allowed two earned runs on seven hits while striking out two.
The Greyhounds backed Palmer with 10 runs, including seven by the time he left the game in the sixth.
The Panthers jumped out to a two-run lead after one inning, but Assumption answered with a run in the second on an RBI single by Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn. / Bristol Central), driving in graduate student Ben Benigno (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull) who tripled earlier in the inning.
The Greyhounds followed with three runs in the third inning, capitalizing on three Panther errors while collecting two hits in the inning. Benigno had his second triple in as many innings to drive in the third Greyhound run of the frame, pushing the Greyhound lead to two, 4-2.
Assumption extended the lead to four with two runs in the fifth and didn't look back on the way to a 10-3 victory. Junior Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass. / BMC Durfee) and senior Matt Metcalf (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless work out of the bullpen to put away Adelphi in the first game.
The Greyhounds dropped a back-and-forth second game in which Assumption held four leads but could not pull away in the 13-12 loss.
Assumption jumped out to a four-run lead in the second inning as six Greyhounds reached base with two outs in the inning. Adelphi retired the first two batters of the frame but the next six batters reached base, including senior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken), who had a two-RBI single in the inning.
After Adelphi added a run in the bottom of the second, Benigno had an RBI single in the top of the third to push the Greyhound lead back to four, 5-1.
The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the inning with four runs off Assumption starter Patrick Coleman (Newark, Del. / Salesianum St. Elizabeth).
The teams also traded runs in the fourth inning to leave the score tied heading into the fifth.
After a scoreless fifth, the Greyhounds retook the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. Assumption used a two-out, two-RBI double by freshman catcher Tomas Paine (Upton, Mass. / Nipmuc).
Adelphi answered with four runs in its half of the inning before Assumption took the lead back one final time, 12-11, with three runs in the top of the seventh. Keddy started the inning with his 200th career hit. Smith followed him with a double, placing runners on second and third, and Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass. / Holy Name) tied the game at 11 with a triple. Senior Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) gave the Greyhounds the lead with a sacrifice fly, driving in Johnson.
The Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and the bottom of the eighth off Assumption closer Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn. / Hale Ray), who picked up the loss in the 13-12 final.
The Greyhounds move to 10-20 on the season with the split and now holds a 5-2 record in divisional play, while Adelphi moves to 16-15-1 overall and 5-9 in Northeast-10 Conference play.
Assumption will be back in action on Sunday, April 14 for the third game of its series against Adelphi University. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
