Box Score Worcester, Mass. (April 16) -- The Assumption College baseball team used a five-run seventh inning to move past American International College with an 8-3 victory in Northeast-
10 Conference Southwest Divisional play on Tuesday.
The Greyhounds improve to 11-21 overall with the victory and 6-3 in divisional play while the Yellow Jackets fall to 13-15 overall and 1-8 in the division.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on two Greyhound errors before scoring on a sacrifice fly.
Assumption answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, also taking advantage of two errors and collecting two hits in the inning. Senior Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass. / Boston College) started the inning off with a double to left field. Following back-to-back fly outs, junior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn. / Bristol Central) and senior Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech) each reached on fielding errors, with Napoli coming around to score on Keddy's attempt.
Senior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) continued his hot streak and gave the Greyhounds the lead with a two-RBI double to left center.
After two scoreless innings, AIC tied the game up in the fifth off Assumption starter Mitch Kelly (Watertown, Conn. / Watertown). Overall Kelly worked 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out three. The sophomore issued one of those hits in the fifth inning while walking two and giving up two runs to tie the game.
After a scoreless sixth, the Greyhounds exploded for five runs in the seventh on five hits while drawing a walk to blow the game open.
Freshman Tomas Paine (Upton, Mass. / Nipmuc) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Clark. Keddy walked, knocking AIC starter Daniel Guerrero out of the game.
After Smith struck out, Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass. / Holy Name) and Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass. / Northbridge) hit back-to-back singles to drive in three runs combined. Graduate student Ben Benigno (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull) hit a double to left to put runners on second and third before Napoli capped the scoring with a two-RBI double to right field.
Senior's Matt Metcalf (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) and Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn. / Nathan Hale Ray) combined for 4.1 innings of no-hit work out of the bullpen. Metcalf got the Greyhounds started with 3.1 innings of hitless work before Bradley pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the win.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Wednesday, April 17th as Assumption will play host to Bentley University. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Rocheleau Field in Worcester, Mass.
