West Haven, Conn. (April 27) -- The Assumption College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the University of New Haven by scores of 6-2 and 6-0 at Frank Vieira Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds dropped game one 6-2 despite out-hitting the Chargers by a 10-8 margin and getting multi-hit games from senior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken), senior Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass. / Boston College), and freshman Tomas Paine (Upton, Mass. / Nipmuc).

New Haven used a four-run third inning to knock Assumption starter Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) out of the game. LaRosa struck out four batters in 2.2 innings, but gave up four runs on six hits before departing in the third.

The Chargers scored runs in the fourth and sixth to extend the lead to six before Assumption started chipping away with a run in the top of the seventh. Paine started the inning with a single, the first of three straight singles the Greyhounds would record in the frame. He came around to score as senior Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech) grounded into a run-scoring double play, but that is all the damage Assumption would do in the inning.

After a scoreless eighth, the Greyhounds added three more hits in the ninth but could only push across one more run on a sacrifice fly by junior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn. / Bristol Central) on the way to the 6-2 final.

The Greyhounds dropped the second game by a 6-0 final as junior Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass. / BMC Durfee) took the loss for Assumption, working 5.1 innings while allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits while striking out five.

The Chargers scored a single run in the third and two runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead after four innings. After a scoreless fifth, New Haven scored three runs in the sixth on the way to a 6-0 final.

Assumption falls to 13-28 on the season including an 8-8 record in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest divisional play while New Haven improves to 24-12 overall and 11-5 in divisional action.

The Greyhounds and Chargers will wrap up the three-game series with a final game on Sunday, April 28th. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Frank Vieira Field.
