Box Score Worcester, Mass. (April 30) -- The Assumption College baseball team dropped a 2-0 final to American International College in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Divisional play at Rocheleau Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Prior to the game the Greyhounds honored their senior class for their contributions to the program. Assumption honored seven seniors, Matt Metcalf (Warwick, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken), Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Tech), Travis Smith (Coventry R.I. / Bishop Hendricken), Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y. / John Jay CR), Ben Benigno (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull), Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn. / Hale Ray), and Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass. / Boston College).
Junior Bill King (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) had a strong start for the Greyhounds, working 6.1 innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out five. He retired the first six batters he faced in the outing and didn't allow a hit to the first nine batters until allowing back-to-back singles with two outs in the third inning.
The third inning started with an error, allowing an unearned run to come across on the second single, giving AIC a 1-0 lead after three innings.
The Yellow Jackets added a run in the seventh inning before the Assumption bullpen closed the game with 2.2 innings of shutout ball.
Junior Daniel Guerrero earned the win for AIC, pitching a complete game three-hit shutout. The junior struck out 10 Greyhounds while allowing three walks and hitting a batter in his outing.
Assumption had a scoring chance in the seventh inning as Napoli had a one-out single. After a strikeout, freshman Tomas Paine singled into right field but Napoli was thrown out at the plate to end the threat.
The Greyhounds fall to 13-30 on the season including an 8-10 record in divisional play while the Yellow Jackets improve to 18-19 overall and 6-12 in the division.
Assumption is back in action on Friday, May 3rd for a doubleheader against Le Moyne College. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
