Box Score 2 Easton, Mass. (April 6) -- On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College softball team dropped a pair of non-divisional games to Stonehill College at Fr. Gartland Field. The Hounds fell by a 5-1 final in nine innings in game one, followed by an 11-7 setback in game two.
In the first game, junior pitcher Jenn Lattal (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) went the opening three innings before being relieved by senior Rachel Hedge (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) for 5.1 innings of eight-hit relief action. The game went back and forth into extra innings before Megan Staudle knocked a game-winning grand slam over the fence in the ninth for the 5-1 victory.
After an early 1-0 lead in the fifth, the Hounds tied the game at 1-1 on a two-out RBI double by senior Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) that scored sophomore Jess DiPilato (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name).
In game two, the Hounds jumped on top with an unearned run in the top of the first for the early lead. Stonehill answered in the bottom of the second as Morrell led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on a two-out sacrifice fly. Assumption answered in the third with three runs on four hits and two errors as the Hounds regained the advantage at 4-3 after three full. Freshman Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven) put up a solo homer in the fourth and the Hounds increased their lead up to two runs at 5-3 heading to the bottom of the frame.
Game two featured 29 total hits, including two hits each from DiPilato, senior Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) and junior Nikki Boris (Gardner, Mass/Gardner). Medeiros led the attack with a performance that included with a double and a home run in the sixth that cut the lead down to 6-4 heading to the bottom of the sixth. Stonehill put together a five-hit, seven-run inning to close out the eventual four-run victory for the Skyhawks.
Freshman Jess Underwood (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) falls to 2-2 on the season after innings pitched as she scattered 14 hits and 11 runs with three walks and two strikeouts.
With the losses, Assumption drops to 8-16 overall, while Stonehill improves to 17-14 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, April 7th as the Hounds travel to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley University in a Northeast-10 doubleheader beginning at Noon.
