Easton, Mass. (April 21) -- On Monday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team wrapped up its three-game divisional series with Saint Michael's College with an 8-6 victory over the Purple Knights at Lou Gorman Field at Stonehill College. The Hounds took two out of three games from Saint Michael's in the series.
The Hounds, who pounded out 14 hits as every starter reached base at least once, got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to right by junior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) scored senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) for the 1-0 lead. In the second, senior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) drew a bases-loaded walk for the 2-0 edge, followed by a grand slam to left by Figueroa for his fourth homer of the season and the commanding 6-0 lead over the Purple Knights.
In the fourth, each team scored a single run, beginning with an unearned run by right fielder Nicky Elderton for the visitors as he came home on an Assumption error. The Hounds answered for the 7-1 lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring junior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) on an RBI single thru the left side by senior Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme).
After a single run in the seventh made it 7-2 in favor of the Hounds, Elderton hit a two-run homer in the eighth to key a three-run inning that closed the margin to 7-5 heading into the final two innings of the contest. Assumption sophomore catcher Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) hit a sacrifice fly to center to score O'Donnell in the bottom of the eighth, followed by the final Saint Michael's run in the top of the ninth for the 8-6 final score.
Senior Patrick Coleman (Newark, Del./ Salesianum St. Elizabeth) picked up the win for the Hounds to improve to 2-0 as he went seven innings with seven hits allowed and six strikeouts. Figueroa pitched the ninth, earning his fourth save of the season. Saint Michael's starter Luke Barkowski dropped to 0-3 overall as he went one inning and faced five batters in the second for the Purple Knights.
Four Assumption players had multiple hits in the game, including three hits each by Smith and freshman Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken).
With the win, Assumption improves to 14-17 overall and 5-8 in the division, while Saint Michael's falls to 3-20 overall and 1-11 in divisional play.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 23rd as the Hounds Stonehill for a 3 p.m. start. The game is the third in the divisional series with the Skyhawks as the teams split the first two contests.
