Worcester, Mass. (April 6) -- In a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team split with the College of Saint Rose in a pair of non-divisional games at Rocheleau Field. Assumption took game one by an 8-3 final, followed by a back-and-forth 11-10 slugfest in the second game as the Golden Knights salvaged the split.
In game one, Saint Rose took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Tyler Ungerland drove in Chad Adams with the first run of the game. Adams reached to lead off the inning with a double to left center and after moving to third on a groundout, he scored on Ungerland's double to right center. Assumption answered in the bottom of the third as sophomore Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) singled thru the right side to score sophomore Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) with the tying run. After Saint Rose regained the lead at 2-1 in the top of the sixth, the Hounds put together a busy three-run sixth to jump ahead by a 4-2 margin heading to the final three innings. Highlighting the inning was a two-RBI single thru the left side by senior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) that scored Panza and freshman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) for the two-run lead.
The Golden Knights scored a single run in the top of the seventh, but the Hounds struck for three in the bottom of the frame behind a Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) triple as the senior finished a single shy of the cycle in the opener. He added a solo homer to right in the bottom of the eighth as he finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one run batted in.
Senior Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) picked up the win with 6.2 innings of work to improve to 3-1, while Josh Johnson dropped to 0-1 in just 0.1 innings of relief.
In the second game, the two teams traded the lead back and forth five times as the Golden Knights pulled out the eventual 11-10 victory to earn the split. Trailing by a 6-2 margin going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Assumption took its first lead of the game with a five-run frame for the one-run lead. Keying the rally was a two-RBI single thru the right side by junior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge), along with a two-RBI double into the right field corner by freshman Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I/Bishop Hendricken) that put the Hounds ahead by a 7-6 margin.
The Golden Knights answered with a four-run top of the seventh as Scott Hladik scored from third for the lead. The Hounds caught a Saint Rose player in a rundown while attempting to steal second, but Hladik came home on the play for the 8-7 lead for the visitors. Saint Rose eventually extended the lead out to 10-7, but the hosts answered with three in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game yet again. Highlighting the three-run frame was another two-RBI hit from Figueroa as he tied the contest with a single to center for the 10-10 score.
Saint Rose regained the lead in the top of the eighth with an RBI double to right center by first baseman Zac Bellinger that scored Hladik with the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run. Assumption had two runners on in the ninth in game two, but couldn't net the equalizer as the Golden Knights earned the split.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 9th as the Hounds travel to Stonehill for a 3:30 p.m. start.
