Waltham, Mass. (May 3) -- On Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 divisional game, the Assumption College baseball team fell short in a ninth-inning comeback attempt as the Hounds dropped a 4-3 final to Bentley University in game two of a three-game series.
Bentley jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as shortstop Will Brennan singled to center for the game's first run. After a one-out, bases-loaded walk made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Hounds forced the Falcons into an inning-ending double play to preserve the two-run margin.
Assumption got on the board in the top of the fifth as senior Bret Clark (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) singled to center for the RBI as sophomore catcher Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) scored for the 2-1 margin. Paine reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a passed ball to set up the unearned run. The Falcons added two unearned runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth as Assumption trailed by a 4-1 scored heading to the final three outs of the game for the visitors.
In the ninth, senior captain Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) doubled to left to close to within 4-2, followed by an RBI fielder's choice by Clark with two outs for the 4-3 margin. Nate Witkowski capped the ninth inning for Bentley with the final out as he picked up his first save of the season for the Falcons and preserved the one-run victory.
Senior Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) took the loss to drop to 4-3 overall, going 7.2 innings with eight hits allowed, four runs (two earned) and five strikeouts. Connor Root picked up the win for Bentley with eight innings pitched, scattering seven hits with five strikeouts to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Smith and Clark each finished with two hits for the Hounds, including two runs batted in by Clark.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 18-20 overall and 9-11 in Northeast divisional play, while Bentley improves to 22-15 overall and 13-6 in the division.
Assumption wraps up the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon as the Hounds take on Bentley University for a 1 p.m. start in Waltham. The game is a make-up of the contest originally scheduled for May 1st.
