March 1 (Winter Park, Fla.) -- On Sunday night at Baseball Week, the Assumption College baseball team dropped an 11-3 final to the College of Saint Rose in non-conference action at Alfond Stadium on the campus of Rollins College.
Assumption jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a pair of unearned runs off of Saint Rose starter Ryan Harper. Junior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by an infield single from sophomore Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) to get two runners on. A throwing error by the pitcher later in the frame moved the runners into scoring position and the pair came home on an RBI groundout to shortstop by senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) for the early lead.
Saint Rose answered in the top of the second off Hounds starter Kevin O'Connor (Leominster, Mass./Leominster). Tyler Ungerland was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later scored on a one-out RBI single to right by Mike Flynn. Derek Reed came home in the next at-bat on a fielder's choice before an inning-ending double play sent the game into the third tied at 2-2. In the top of the third, the Golden Knights struck for four runs to seize control of the game at 6-2 as the team picked up four hits and took advantage of an error. Saint Rose picked up three straight hits to start the inning, including a leadoff double to left center by Nick Venier and a double to left center by Lukas Nethaway for two of six Golden Knight extra-base hits in the game.
Assumption answered back in the bottom of the inning though with its third run of the contest as sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) singled up the middle with two outs to score senior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name). Johnson reached earlier in the inning on a two-out double to right before advancing to third on a single by O'Donnell and scoring on the Coggeshall hit.
The Golden Knights added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings off freshman reliever Rob Gambale (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial), who went five strong innings in relief of O'Connor. O'Connor lasted three innings and drops to 0-2 overall after giving up six hits and five earned runs with two strikeouts. Gambale went five innings of five-hit relief with Saint Rose scoring a pair off of him while the rookie picked up two strikeouts. Kyle Chudoba (Oxford, Conn./Oxford) pitched the ninth for Assumption as the Golden Knights scored three in the inning off the freshman to account for the 11-3 final.
Saint Rose outhit Assumption 14-4 in the game, with all four Hounds hits coming from 1-for-4 performances by the 2-thru-5 hitters in the lineup. Reed was 3-for-3 for the Golden Knights, while Nethaway was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Harper improved to 1-1 overall for Saint Rose as he lasted eight innings, scattering four hits with three runs allowed, one earned, while adding three strikeouts and no walks.
