Hounds Drop Snow-Shortened Final to Penmen, 5-1

Box Score

Haverhill, Mass. (March 15) -- In a game shortened to five innings due to accumulating snow on the field, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 5-1 non-conference final to Southern New Hampshire University at Trinity Field.

Junior pitcher Steve Flynn (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) got the start for the Hounds, going two innings and allowing no hits with a pair of first-inning strikeouts and two walks in the no-decision. Thru five starts and 24 innings pitched in 2015, Flynn now has 26 strikeouts overall for the Hounds.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Penmen took advantage of five walks and posted two hits to score all five of their runs for the 5-0 advantage. Zach Goldstein posted a one-out triple to pick up an RBI in the inning, along with an RBI single by Manny Cruz before the Penmen drew four straight walks in the frame.

Assumption continued to trail 5-0 into the top of the fifth, as snow was covering the field, until the Hounds picked up a run on a pair of back-to-back one-out doubles for the 5-1 margin. After a strikeout to start the inning, junior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) doubled and came home on an RBI double from junior catcher Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc). The Penmen finished off the game on a strikeout looking and a fly ball to right though to close out the victory.

Assumption falls to 3-11 overall with the loss, while the Penmen are now 10-5 after winning their fourth straight.

The Hounds are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday, March 17th in a non-conference game at American International beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
