Garden City, N.Y. (March 22) -- In a non-divisional Northeast-10 doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Adelphi University at Bonomo Field in the home opener for the Panthers. The Hounds fell 6-4 in game one, followed by an 11-inning, 8-7 setback in the second game as Adelphi picked up the sweep.
The Hounds got on the board with three runs in the top of the first as senior Greg O'Donnell (Northborough, Mass./Northborough) homered to right to drive in juniors Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) and Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) for the 3-0 edge. Adelphi cut into that lead in the bottom of the first though, taking advantage of two stolen bases, two walks and an error to send the game to the second at 3-2. The Panthers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run inning, posting four hits that included an RBI double to left center by Eric Hassell as Adelphi extended out to a 5-3 advantage thru five. The teams traded runs in the top of the seventh and bottom of the eighth, en route to the 6-4 final. In the seventh, Assumption sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) reached on a two-out, three-base error by the Adelphi centerfielder and came home on error by the Adelphi pitcher for the final Hounds run.
Junior Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) took the loss for Assumption in the game, dropping to 0-4 as he went five innings and gave up five hits with four earned runs. Jonathon Mulford picked up the win for the Panthers with a seven-inning effort to improve to 2-0 on the season, followed by the save from Mike Cranston for his first of the season.
In game two, the Panthers got on the board first on a two-run homer to right by Nick Zito after Kory Cassara reached on a one-out walk to start things up for Adelphi. The Hounds cut the lead in half in the top of the second on an RBI single to center by junior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) that scored senior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) for the 2-1 margin. Assumption tied the game for the first time in the top of the fourth on back-to-back, one-out triples by freshmen Bryan Guerrero (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass./Boston College) to tie the game at 2-2.
The Panther seemingly took control in the bottom of the fourth with a five-run inning, putting together three hits and taking advantage of an Assumption error for the 7-2 lead heading to the fifth. Assumption chipped away at the lead though, picking up single runs in both the fifth and seventh as the teams headed into the bottom of the ninth at 7-5 in favor of Adelphi.
Assumption sent the game to extras though as a Coggeshall RBI single made it a one-run game, followed by an RBI double from O'Donnell to knot things up at 7-7. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the 11th inning, when the Panthers picked up the game-winning run and the 8-7 victory. Ray Triano reached on a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and went to third on an error before eventually coming home on a fielder's choice for the game-winning run.
Junior Steve Flynn (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) took the hard-luck loss for the Hounds, going just 0.1 innings and allowing the one unearned run to fall to 1-2 overall. Nikolas Batas went the final two innings for Adelphi, picking up the win while improving to 1-1 overall.
With the pair of losses, Assumption drops to 3-13 overall on the season, while Adelphi sits at 4-5 overall and has won three straight.
Assumption is scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Merrimack at 3:30 p.m. Stayed tuned to www.assumptiongreyhounds.com though for all schedule changes, due to playing conditions at Rocheleau Field and many fields throughout the New England region.
