Box Score
Winter Park, Florida (March 4) -- Despite three hits each from senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) and sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 5-4 final to Saint Anselm College on Wednesday afternoon at Rollins College.
Assumption jumped ahead by a 1-0 margin in the top of the first as O'Donnell drove in junior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) on an RBI double to center with two outs. Paine reached base originally on a one-out double of his own that was hit to left. The game remained at 1-0 Hounds until the bottom of the third inning, when Saint Anselm struck for four runs off of Assumption starter Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard). The Hawks got things going in the five-hit inning with a triple to right by Ken Morrisino, followed by an RBI groundout. An RBI hit from Nick Bragole, along with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to right from Allan McQuarrie that scored Bragole, gave Saint Anselm the 4-1 edge after three full.
The Hounds answered right back with a three-run fourth, highlighted by three straight hits to start the inning. After a double to right by senior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name), O'Donnell singled to center and Coggeshall singled to right to bring Johnson in from third. Freshman Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass./Boston College) picked up an RBI on a two-out single to short, along with a triple by senior Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) to tie the game as Jaehnig scored for the third straight game he has appeared in.
Freshman Nick Massarelli (Southwick, Mass./Southwick) kept the Hawks off the scoreboard for the next three innings before the Hawks picked up the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to drop Massarelli to 0-1 on the season. In the inning, Saint Anselm picked up a leadoff to single to left and bunted the runner over to second. After a groundout to short moved the runner up to third, John Marculitis came home with the go-ahead run on a Hound error. Massarelli took the loss, going four innings of relief as he scattered five hits with one run and one strikeout.
Assumption threatened in the top of the ninth off Seve Llanio and had two base runners with one out before a double play ended the threat and the game. Adam Krol picked up the win for the Hawks as he went 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to improve to 1-0 on the year.
Assumption drops to 2-7 overall with the loss, while Saint Anselm picks up the win for a 1-7 mark.
The Hounds are back in action on Thursday night as Assumption takes on Concordia for a 6 p.m. start at Rollins College.
