Balanced Attack Paces Hounds in 8-4 Win Over Concordia

Box Score

Winter Park, Florida (March 5) -- On Wednesday night at Rollins College, the Assumption College baseball team used a balanced offensive attack to key an 8-4 win over Concordia College at Baseball Week at Alfond Stadium.

Concordia jumped on top by a 2-0 margin in the top of the first off of Hounds junior starter Kevin O'Connor (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) in his third start of the year. Jason Reyes reached on a leadoff walk and came home on an Assumption error, followed by a one-out RBI single by Cristian Fiorito that scored Giorgio Palmiero for the 2-0 edge. Assumption answered in a big way in the bottom of the frame overall however as five hits in the inning included an RBI single to right from sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) that scored junior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc). After a single by freshman Jordan Roper (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) scored senior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) for the tying run, the eventual go-ahead run came home on a sacrifice fly by freshman Bryan Guerrero (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial).

The Hounds added a single run in the fourth as junior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) came home on a single up the middle by junior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame). The hit continues a solid start to the season by Panza, who has now posted hits in eight of 10 games and has a five-game hitting streak.

A three-run sixth extended the advantage out to 7-2 to put the game out of reach, en route to the eventual four-run final. Clancy clubbed his first homer of the season with a shot to right for the solo homer, along with a near grand slam later in the inning by senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) that brought home two runs after hitting off the top of the fence.

Each team added a single run in the seventh, followed by a run from the Clippers in the ninth off the Hounds final reliever of the day for the 8-4 final. O'Connor improved to 1-1 overall on the season, going six innings while scattering five hits with one earned run and nine strikeouts. For the Clippers, Ian Cole took the loss to fall to 1-2 as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits in just 4.2 innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

Paine tied a career-high with a four-hit game for the Hounds, along with two hits apiece from O'Donnell, Coggeshall and Clancy.

Assumption improves to 3-7 overall in the win, while Concordia drops to 4-4 on the season.

Assumption is back in action on Friday, March 6th as the Hounds take on Rollins College for a 2:30 start at Alfond Stadium.
