Box Score

Winter Park, Florida (March 7) -- On the final day of the team's spring trip, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 7-6 final to Saint Anselm College in non-conference action on Saturday morning at Alfond Stadium.

The Hawks took a 1-0 advantage in the first as Joe Morin singled to left with two outs to drive in Max Wadington for the early lead. Assumption answered in the second though as senior Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) drove in sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewbury) with a double to left, followed by an RBI single to left from sophomore Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) to score freshman Bryan Guerrero (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial) for the 2-1 edge.

Following an RBI single by Coggeshall that scored junior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) in the bottom of the third, Saint Anselm answered back with two runs in the top of the fifth to knot the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Hounds went back in front with two runs for the 5-3 edge over the Hawks in the second meeting of the week with Saint Anselm. In the inning, Guerrero and Sims added back-to-back, one-out singles before a two-RBI double down the right field line by Murphy scored the pair to put the Hounds back in front.

The Hawks answered quickly with the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh, coming off of freshman Kyle Chudoba (Oxfolrd, Conn./Coxford), as Wadington, Morin and Bragole picked up RBI's in the frame for the 6-5 lead. The teams each added a single run in the eighth to preserve the one-run final, en route to an 11-9 advantage in total hits by Assumption.

Tyler Buck took the eventual win for Saint Anselm, going 4.2 innings of two-run relief in the final. Senior Steve Flynn (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) went six innings in the close game for the Hounds, scattering four hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. Buck picked up the win for the Hawks, improving to 1-0 on the season.

Sims paces four Hounds with multiple hits as he had three on the day to go along with two runs batted in.

Assumption finishes the team's spring trip with a 3-9 record, while Saint Anselm improves to 3-10 overall with the victory on Saturday.
