Colchester, Vt. (April 11) -- On Saturday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field, the Assumption College baseball team picked up a divisional split with Saint Michael's College as the Hounds won game one by a 13-4 final before dropping the second contest, 11-5.

In game one, junior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) paced the Hounds in the game with a four-hit, four-run explosion. Junior Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) picked up the victory for Assumption, going seven innings while scattering eight hits on two earned runs and five strikeouts to improve to 1-4 overall.

Senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge), who finished the game 2-for-6 with four RBI, got the Hounds on the board in the first with a two-run home and the early 2-0 lead. Assumption extended the lead to 5-0 with a three-run second, keyed by a two-run homer by junior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford). After the Knights pushed two across in the bottom of the second, the Hounds posted three-run innings in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings to make it an 11-2 game thru five frames.

Overall in the game, four Hounds posted multiple hits, including the four-hit game from Panza. Junior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, along with a perfect 3-for-3 showing from senior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) that also included two RBI.

Freshman Nick Massarelli (Southwick, Mass./Southwick) pitched two innings of one-run relief for the Hounds, while Will Corkum took the loss for Saint Michael's to drop to 0-3 overall.

In game two, the Purple Knights took an early 2-0 lead off of Assumption freshman starter Kyle Chudoba (Oxford, Conn./Oxford) before the Hounds answered with two unearned runs in the top of the second. Saint Michael's took the lead for good with two in the bottom of the second, followed by a Johnson RBI in the third for the 4-3 margin. The hosts added three runs in the third and two in the fourth, staking to a 9-3 advantage thru four frames.

Assumption closed the margin to 9-5 in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice and an RBI single up the middle by freshman Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass./Boston College) before two later runs accounted for the 11-5 final.

Chudoba dropped to 1-3 overall with the loss as he went 2.2 innings, giving up seven hits and seven runs (three earned). Peter Cross picked up the win for Saint Michael's, going five innings to improve to 2-2.

Panza finished game two 2-for-5, while O'Donnell was 3-for-5 with a run scored.

With the split, Assumption now sits at 7-15 overall and 3-2 in divisional play, while the Purple Knights are 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Sunday, April 12th as the Hounds host Bentley University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Rocheleau Field.
