Easton, Mass. (April 16) -- On Thursday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 10-3 road final to Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference divisional action. The game is the second of three matchups between the two teams this season, with the final one coming in Easton in late April.
Junior Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) pitched a perfect first as he had the start for the Hounds, followed by two scoreless innings from senior Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) as he struck out four of the nine batters he faced. Stonehill starter Armand Rugel, who ended up lasting six innings for the win, kept the Hounds off the board early and the game headed to the fourth inning scoreless thru three.
Assumption struck for a single run in the top of the fourth as freshman Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass./Boston College) launched a one-out solo homer to right center for the 1-0 advantage. Stonehill came alive in the bottom of the inning though, posting a five-run frame off of freshman pitcher Mike Curtis (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) for a 5-1 advantage after four. The Skyhawks picked up five hits in the inning and took advantage of an Assumption throwing error to jump out to the lead.
The Hounds scored single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth, beginning with a two-out RBI single up the middle by senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) in the fifth that scored freshman Bryan Guerrero (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial). Jaehnig scored in the sixth for the team's third run to cut the lead to 5-3 as he reached on a leadoff double, advanced to third on an error and came home on a groundout. The Skyhawks added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-3 lead, followed by a three-run eighth as the hosts ended the game with 16 hits overall. Six Stonehill players ended with multiple hits, including three hits each from Brian Campbell and Christian Baglini.
Jaehnig and O'Donnell each picked up two hits to pace the Hounds, with O'Donnell extending his hitting streak to 13 straight games. Curtis took the loss for the Hounds to drop to 0-3 overall, while Rugel went six innings in the win as he struck out eight and improved to 5-0 for the season.
Assumption falls to 8-19 and 4-8 in the division, while Stonehill improved to 20-9-1 overall and 8-5 in divisional action.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 18th as the Hounds host Southern New Hampshire University for a divisional doubleheader beginning at Noon at Rocheleau Field.
