Baseball Drops Divisional Twinbill to No. 24 SNHU

Worcester, Mass. (April 18) -- In Northeast-10 divisional play on Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team was swept by No. 24 ranked Southern New Hampshire University by finals to 26-5 and 20-5 at Rocheleau Field.

Game One
The Penmen jumped on the board in the top of the first with a two-RBI double off the left field fence by Alejandro Diaz for the early 2-0 edge. The Hounds cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the frame with two outs as a triple to left center by senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) scored sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) for the first Assumption run. SNHU pushed the lead to 3-1 in the second on a two-out wild pitch that scored Cam Oliviera, followed by a six-run third for the 9-1 advantage.

Extra-base hits were the story for the Penmen in game one as the visitors finished with 12 extra-base hits of their 22 total hits. SNHU struck for a number of those in the fifth and sixth innings, when the Penmen scored 13 runs and extended the lead out to 25-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the inning, the Hounds scored three runs to make it a 25-4 margin. In the frame, Assumption used a two-RBI triple by Coggeshall and an RBI single from O'Donnell in the inning to put up the three runs.

For the game, the Penmen picked up 22 total hits as eight SNHU players had multiple hits in the game. For Assumption, the team was led by a 3-for-4 outing by O'Donnell, along with a pair of hits from freshman DH Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass./Boston College).

Junior Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) took the loss for the Hounds, falling to 1-5 on the season. Mike Robert picked up the win for the Penmen, improving to 2-1 in his fifth appearance of the year.

Game Two
In game two, the Penmen jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a solo homer by Alejandro Diaz with no outs in the second. The lead stretched to 3-0 before junior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) scored on a single by senior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) in the bottom of the fifth for the 3-1 margin. The Hounds cut the lead down to just one on an RBI single up the middle by sophomore Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) that scored senior Billy Johnson to make it a 4-2 game. Tyler Fortanascio answered in the top of the sixth though with a two-run homer to deep left center, putting the Penmen back in control at 5-2. Assumption cut the lead back to two at 5-3 with two out in the bottom of the frame as Jaehnig's RBI single to right scored junior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc).

From that point, it was all Penmen as the visitors put things out of reach with an 11-run seventh inning to extend to a 16-3 lead. Adding two more runs in the top of the eighth, SNHU led 18-3 before an RBI double by O'Donnell with two outs in the bottom of the eighth scored the fourth Assumption run. The hit also extended O'Donnell's team-leading hitting streak to 15 straight games.

Freshman Kyle Chudoba (Oxford, Conn./Oxford) took the loss to drop to 1-4 overall and he went six innings and allowed 12 hits and nine runs. Tim Viehoff went five innings for the Penmen, picking up the win to improve to 3-1 overall.

With the sweep, Assumption drops to 8-21 overall and 4-10 in the NE-10, while the Penmen improve to 23-7 overall and 9-2 in league play.

Assumption is back in action on Sunday, April 19th as the Hounds and Penmen wrap up their three-game divisional series beginning at 1 p.m. at Rocheleau Field.
