Worcester, Mass. (April 19) -- On Sunday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 14-2 final to No. 24 ranked Southern New Hampshire as the Penmen picked up the sweep of the three-game divisional series.

The Penmen jumped on the board in the first with a pair of runs, sparked by a Zach Goldstein leadoff triple to right to get things started. He eventually scored on a Carson Helms RBI single to right, followed by an RBI double down the right field line by Alejandro Diaz for the 2-0 edge. Assumption answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame as freshman Bryan Guerrero (Quincy, Mass./Boston College) scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury).

Assumption senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) connected with two outs in the bottom of the third for his third homer of the season to make it a 5-2 score. O'Donnell extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games in the process as the ball bounced off the back of the press box located beyond the center field fence.

The Penmen picked up two runs in the top of the sixth for the 7-2 advantage as SNHU picked up three hits and took advantage of one error. In the bottom of the frame, O'Donnell led off and hit a hard shot up the middle that was snared by Goldstein, who made a spectacular throw to first for the out. SNHU put up three runs in the top of the seventh as well, started by a two-RBI double to left by Papa, for the 10-2 lead. Papa added three RBI in the eighth as well as he cleared the bases with a double to left for the 13-2 margin. Shortstop Manny Cruz came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, flying out to Guerrero for the second out. Papa attempted to score from third on the play, but was thrown out on the play by Guerrero on a solid throw from center.

The Penmen completed the scoring in the top of the ninth, pushing across a run on a passed ball for the 14-2 final.

Jaehnig led the Hounds offense with a 3-for-4 afternoon, while the Penmen had six players with multiple hits.
