North Andover, Mass. (April 22) -- On Wednesday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 5-3 road final to Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference divisional action at Warrior Diamond.
The teams each scored a single run in the first as freshman Bryan Guerrero (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial) came home for the Hounds for the first of his two runs on the day. Guerrero eventually gave the Hounds the 2-1 edge in the top of the fifth as well as he came home on a Merrimack error for the slight 2-1 Assumption advantage.
Merrimack went in front to stay in the bottom of the fifth though with a trio of unearned runs, staking to a 4-2 lead heading into the second half of the game. The Hounds got one back in the top of the sixth as junior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) led off with a double to left center and came home on a two-out groundout for the 4-3 margin.
Assumption junior starter Steve Flynn (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) lasted seven innings, scattering five hits with five runs allowed, including just two earned. The final run of those five came in the bottom of the seventh as Matt Brown singled to right to score Cam DiSarcina to account for the 5-3 final score. Flynn dropped to 2-5 overall with the loss, while Zach Schindler went six innings in the win to improve to 2-2 on the season. Nate Speilvogel pitched a perfect ninth inning for Merrimack, earning his fourth save on the season.
For the game, the teams combined for 10 errors and Merrimack held a slight 5-4 advantage in total hits. Guerrero paced the team with two runs scored, while Panza posted a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
Assumption drops to 8-23 overall and 4-10 in the division, while Merrimack evens its record at 14-14 overall and 6-9 in divisional action.
The Hounds are back in action on Thursday afternoon as the team hosts Bridgeport for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference start at Rocheleau Field.
