Worcester, Mass. (April 23) -- In the team's final non-conference game of the season, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 13-5 final to the University of Bridgeport on Thursday afternoon at Rocheleau Field.
Bridgeport jumped on the board in the top of the first with a three-run frame, started with a two-RBI single to right center by Tim Bickford that scored Dylan Steigerwald and Dave Egeland. Bickford later came home on an RBI groundout for the early 3-0 margin. The Purple Knights added to the lead in the top of the second with a pair as a two-RBI double to center by Egeland made it 5-0.
The Hounds plated their first run in the bottom of the third as sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) doubled to center to score junior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame). The Purple Knights gained control of the game with a three-run sixth that included two unearned runs, followed by a four-run seventh to make it 12-1 in favor of the visitors.
Assumption's Ben O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) scored on a hit batter in the seventh to close to 12-2, followed by runs from senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) and freshman Bryan Guerrero (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial) for a 12-4 score after eight. Each team scored a single run in the ninth, including an RBI triple to right by freshman Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass./Boston College) that scored pinch hitter Jayson Brown (Pasadena, Md./Mercersburg Academy) for the game's final run and the 13-5 final.
Junior Ronny Sampson (Jefferson, Mass./West Boylston) dropped to 0-2 after a four-inning start, while Ray Kreiger went six innings as he improved to 4-1 on the season.
Ben O'Donnell went 3-for-4 to lead the offense, while Jaehnig added a pair of hits. For Bridgeport, five players finished the game with multiple hits.
Assumption drops to 8-24 overall with the loss, while Bridgeport now sits at 18-20 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 25th as the Hounds travel to No. 1 ranked Franklin Pierce for a divisional doubleheader in Rindge, N.H.
